16. short 和 shortly
short 是“突然地”(suddenly):
The driver stopped short when the child ran into the street.小孩冲进街里,司机突然刹车。
Stopping the car short caused a pileup on the highway.这辆汽车突然停车使高速公路上许多汽车相撞。
We almost hit the car ahead of us when it stopped short. 前面的汽车突然刹车,我们差点撞上了它。
shortly 则是“不久”(soon);“不远的地方”(in a short distance ); “简短地”(in a few words);或“不耐烦地、不客气地”:
Shortly after the accident, the police arrived. 事故发生不久警察就到了。
Turn right shortly beyond the bridge. 过了桥不远的地方就向右拐。
The guard answered shortly that he didn't care what I was .卫兵不客气地回答说他不管我是干什么的。
17. slow和slowly
slow 作副词主要见于go slow, drive slow, pass slow等,其它场合一般用slowly:
Go slow while crossing the bridge. 过桥时慢慢走。
The patient ate slowly, without appetite. 那病人吃得很慢,没有胃口。
18. wide 和widely
wide 作副词是“完全地”(completely),常与 awake 等词连用:
All the window were wide open and filled with sightseers. 所有的窗户完全打开,挤满了观光的人。
I was then wide awake waiting for the Santa Claus .我那时一点睡意都没有,一心等待圣诞老人的到来。
He got up, walked across(A) the room and with(B) a sharp quick movement flung(C) the door widely open(D). (考研,1988)
D错,应改为wide open。他起床后,在房间里走过去,猛然把门打开。
widely 则是“广泛地”(over a wide space of range of things )和“很大程度上、大大地”(to a large deGREe):
Although a boy of seven, he has read widely. 虽然他只不过是个七岁的孩子,但他阅读非常广泛。
These two books are widely different. 这两本书很不相同。
Canning is(A) the most wide(B) used method(C) of food preservation(D). (TOEFL,1981, B错,应改为most widely)将食品做成罐头是应用最广的保存食品的方法。
