This is a game for two players．All you need are four pieces of squared paper and a pencil．Each player has two pieces of paper．On each piece of paper label twelve squares along the top，A to L，and twelve squares down the side，1 to 12．These pieces of paper represent the ocean．
On one of their pieces of paper，both players mark out six ships each on their grid，for example，one battleship，two destroyers（驱逐舰）and three submarines（潜艇）．Five squares can be used for a battleship，three squares for a destroyer and two squares for a submarine．The fleet can be arranged anywhere on the ocean—just make sure your opponent（对抗者）can't see where your ships are！
The second piece of paper is used as a spare grid to record a play's‘shots’．One player starts the game by firing the first shot（saying，for example，‘I am firing at H8’），naming a square that might be occupied by a ship in his opponent's fleet．He then marks down the shot he made on his spare piece of paper so that he doesn't aim at that square again and waste a shot．
The other player then has to tell him whether he has made a‘hit’and crosses off the square if a‘hit’has been made．He does not need to tell his opponent which of his ships has been damaged．Then the second player has a turn to fire his‘gun’in the same way．The game continues with each player taking it in turns to have a‘shot’．
A ship is‘sunk’when each square of the ship has been hit by the other player．The winner is the first player to sink the whole of his opponent's fleet．
