选择式“阅读理解”题是指阅读短文后的试题是采用“选择”的形式，要求选择适当的选项回答问题或完成句子。2001年全国中学生英语能力竞赛初三年级组初赛的“阅读理解”题共有6篇短文，其中只有两篇是“选择式”的。我们选择其中的一篇进行分析，以进一步熟悉此类题型的解题要领。
初三年级组初赛“阅读理解”（B）题：
This dictionary tells you about English words and how to use them in reading，writing and speaking English．It not only gives the meaning of words，it can also help you with spelling，wordbuilding，grammar and pronunciation．
To use your dictionary correctly，you need to understand how the dictionary works．At the front of the book，you will find some exercises to help you make the most use of your dictionary．
If you look up the word“colour”，you will find two spellings for this word．“colour”is used in British English，while“color”is used in American English．When there are differences between British and American spelling，the dictionary shows it with the word“BrE”for British English and“AmE”for American English．
The dictionary also helps you pronounce words correctly．We use a special alphabet（特殊字母表）to show pronunciation．If you turn to the inside back face，you will see all the phonetic letters（音标）with some words to show you how they are pronounced．Just look at the inside back cover when you're not sure how to say a word．
The most important reason for using a dictionary is to find out the meaning of a word—its DEFINITION．
In this dictionary，the definitions have been written using only 2000words．This means that the definitions of even the most difficult words are simply explained（简单解释）and easy to understand．
When a word has more than one meaning，read all the meanings untilyou find the one that correctly tells the use of the word you are looking for．
Most of the words in this dictionary can be used by people in all parts of the world．

本篇短文可能是一本英文词典的“序言”，介绍这本词典的用途和使用方法。因为“选择式”的“阅读理解”题，答案都在选项中，所以我们只需在基本读懂短文的基础上，对照短文，找到与文中对应的句子，逐一推敲，就能解决问题，但有的需要结合上下文甚至全文内容才能敲定。如：通过短文第一段的第一个句子，不用费力就能选对第24小题的答案应为A。
做第25小题，则要仔细推敲第二段文字，通过理解段意（如果熟悉英文词典或懂得一些英文词典的常识则不用）和推敲四个选项的词语意思而确定。All和One都是“走极端”，不对；Few本义是“几乎没有”，不符合文意，只有D．Some正确。
第26小题，答案在第三段。文中“while‘color’is used in American English．”已给出明确答案。
第27小题，通过文中“We use a special alphabet（特殊字母表）to show pronunciation．”一句判断。关键词是“pronunciation（发音）”，清楚这个词的意思，我们无疑会选择 C．say。
第28小题，应重点参考5—6段。实际上，第五段中已有“to find out the meaning of a word—its DEFINITION．”。“meaning of a word”中没有生词，那么，选择对应的汉语“词义”岂不易如反掌！
第29小题，要读完全文后，才能确认。因为，文中提到的数字只有一个“2000”，但它决不是词典的收词数，而是用来“简单解释”词义的用词数。文中并没有提及词典的“收词量”，因此，答案应该是D。
第30小题，答案就在“This means that the definitions of even the most difficult words are simply explained（简单解释）and easy to understand．”一句中。选B最为恰当。
可见，“选择式”阅读理解题，一般绝大部分试题的答案基本来自短文的原话，答案可以直接得到，少数则需综合某一段落，或综观全文，真正理解后得到。
