英语"举例"用法拾零

在英语写作中,作者常会举例说明、论述某一观点.表达列举事例的词语有多种,如:for example(instance), such as, take sth. for example, e.g.等,在应用过程中一定要正确使用.

1. for example和for instance可以互换,其后既可接单词、短语也可接句子.

A lot of us want to leave now- Bill, for example.

You can't rely on her; for instance, she arrived an hour later for an important meeting yesterday.

2. take sth. for example=take, for example, sth. ,但此处的"sth."只能是单词或短语,而不能是句子.

Take, for example, our department. (or: Take our department for example.) The dean is a young professor.

3. such as为"诸如......等",因此,后面不要再接etc.或and so on.

Wild flowers such as orchids(兰花) and primroses(报春花) are becoming rare.

4. e.g.(拉丁语缩略语)=for example,不过,其后一般不接句子,只接单词或短语.

You must avoid sweet foods, e.g. cake, chocolate, sugar, and ice cream.
