It hasn't always been so. During the reign of George I of England, for example, thumb rings were the rage. The French FLASHed their wedding rings on their right hand up until fifteenth century, a practice that continues today in some parts of Scandinavia. Despite these exceptions, the custom of placing the wedding ring on the third finger of the left hand actually dates back to the ancient GREeks, who believed that this finger contains “the vein of love” that runs directly to the heart.
