The most frightening words in the English language are, "Our computer is down." You hear it more and more when you are on business. The other day I was at the airport waiting for a ticket to Washington and the girl in the ticket office said, "I’m sorry, I can’t sell you a ticket. Our computer is down."
"If your computer is down, just write me out a ticket."
"I can’t write you out a ticket. The computer is the only one allowed to do so."
I looked down on the computer and every passenger was just standing there drinking coffee and staring at the black screen. Then I asked her, "What do all you people do ?"
"We give the computer the information about your trip, and then it tells us whether you can fly with us or not."
"So when it goes down, you go down with it."
"That’s good, sir."
"How long will the computer be down?" I wanted to know.
"I have no idea. Sometimes it’s down for 10 minutes, sometimes for two hours. There’s no way we can find out without asking the computer, and since it’s down it won’t answer us."
After the girl told me they had no backup(备用)computer, I said. "let’s forget the computer. What about your planes? They’re still flying, aren’t they?"
"I couldn’t tell without asking the computer."
"Maybe I could just go to the gate and ask the pilot if he’s flying to Washington, " I suggested.
"I wouldn’t know what gate to send you to. Even if the pilot was going to Washington, he couldn’t take you if you didn’t have a ticket."
"Is there any other airline flying to Washington within the next few hours?"
"I wouldn’t know," she said, pointing at the dark screen. "only ’IT’ knows . ’It’ can’t tell me."
By this time there were quite a few people standing in lines. The word soon spread to other travellers that the computer was down. Some people went white, some people started to cry and still others kicked their luggage(行李).

In order to learn a foreign language well, it is necessary to overcome the fear of making mistakes. If the basic goal of language use is communication, then mistakes are secondary considerations that may be dealt with gradually as realization of those mistakes increase. On the other hand, students should not ignore their mistakes. The language learner may observe how native speakers express themselves, and how native expressions differ from the way the learner might say them. For example, a Spanish speaker who has been saying "I do it" to express willingness to do something in the immediate future, could, by interacting with native speakers of English, observe that native speakers actually day "I’ll do it". The resulting difference can serve as a basis for the student to correct his way of using the present tense in English. But a student who is unwilling to interact in the first place would lose this opportunity to learn by trial and error(错误).
64. According to the passage, the present tense in English is ______.
A. not used to express a desire to do something in the immediate future
B. used with some verbs but not with others to express future plan
C. basically the same in English as it is in Spanish
D. not the most difficult problem for foreign students
65. According to the passage, language learners can reduce the number of their mistakes by
____.
A. asking native speakers for explanations
B. reading good books in the foreign language
C. comparing(对比)their speech with that of native speakers
D. speaking without regard to native speakers
66. According to the passage, foreign language students should not worry too much about
making mistakes because ______.
A. native speakers like foreign students who try to learn their language
B. communication is the basic goal of language learning
C. native speakers will ignore their mistakes
D. everyone makes mistakes when trying to communicate in a strange language
67.The author’s main conclusion about the use of mistake in foreign language learning is that
______.
A. mistakes are not important in the course of learning a language
B. learners are often very afraid of making mistakes
C. making mistakes can help the learner discover the rules of the language
D. native speakers often do not tell foreign language learners about their mistakes

How Women Were Freed From Their Homes
As late as 1800,a woman’s only place was in her home. Women in business were unheard of. No respectable woman would dream of entering what was strictly a "man’s world". Even if she would , what could she do? Men were sure that no woman could do a job well outside her home. This was a widely accepted idea. When the famous Brontёsisters began writing books in 1846, they had to resort to using men’s names as aliases(别名).
Teaching was the first profession opened to women, soon after 1800. But even that was not easy for women to take because most high schools and colleges were open only to men. Oberlin College in Ohio was the first college in America to take in women.
Nursing was regarded as a respectable profession for women only after Florence Nightingale won high credit for her nursing career and became famous. Miss Nightingale opened the first training school for nursing in 1860 in England.
The invention of typewriters in 1867 helped to bring women out of their homes to join the business world. Because women are careful and have nimble fingers, businessmen found that they were well suited to this kind of work.
By 1890, tens of thousands of women were working in schools, hospitals, shops, offices, and factories both in England and the States. Some even managed to become doctors or lawyers. The idea of women working in business and other circles was accepted.
68. Oberlin College was the first college in America _________.
A. where teaching was a profession only open to women
B. where girls could get advanced education
C. to train women to be teachers and nurses
D. to accept women only as professors and students
69. It can be inferred from the text that besides nursing, Florence Nightingale was also _____.
A. a doctor B. a lawyer C. a teacher D. a businessman
70. Quite a lot of women entered the business world ________.
A. soon after 1800 B. when Nightingale became famous
C. at the beginning of this century D. after the typewriter came into being
71. If we give another title for the text, which of the following do you think is the best?
A. Women Are Good at Nursing B. Typing Is the Best Profession for Women
C. What Happened in the Business World D. How Women Joined the Outside World

Nov. 12, 1999
Dear John,
How are you ? How are things there in the States?
I’d like to tell you something about our school sports meet. It was held on Nov.8, which was a fine day. There were over 1600 students and teachers attending it. Ten students of each class were required to take part . Twenty teachers also took part in it. Li Yi, a student from my class won the 600-metre race. He finished the race in 12.6 seconds and thus broke the school record. I could say that the sports meet was really a success. That was because all of us were in high spirits and going all out to do better. I was proud of what we had done.
looking forward to receiving your letter.
Yours
Li Ping
