I．Purposes
日常生活中，常要根据事先约定的时间、地点，与人见面，共同商谈或从事某种活动。这种有预约的活动，叫做约会（make an appointment）。与人约会，必须事先预约，或叫请求约会（requesting an appointment），征得对方的同意；同时也要让别人做些必要的准备。比如，把工作时间或原先安排好的活动做些调整，对要谈到的事做些必要的心理准备等。与人约会，应先告诉对方约会的时间、地点（when and where to meet），甚至约会的内容等。
约会应首先做到准时，这样既表现了对别人的尊重，也是现代人时间价值观的重要体现。

（A）请求约会
There's something I'd like to talk over with you．I wonder whether it would be convenient to meet you tomorrow afternoon．我有事想和您商谈。不知明天下午见您是否方便？

III．Background information
在英、美等国家，约会时，人们十分强调准时。尤其是美国人，更以讲究准时著称。首先，美国人对时间本身的价值是极为重视的，时间被他们看作是具有实体性的可以衡量、可以切分或组合的东西。在美国社会中，正规时间的最小集已降为5分钟。这就是说，对于美国社会来说，短短的5分钟也成了不容忽视的一段时间。在他们的语言中，一下子就能找到好多表示“准时”或“及时”的说法，例如：punctual，on schedule，on time，on the minute，to the minute，on the hour，atthe appointed time，the stated time，in time，in good time，timely，well timed等。因此，在美国文化中，准时赴约是理所应当的，迟到（尤其是无故迟到）则是无理的。美国人与其他国家中的人打交道时，对方的不准时常会引起他们的强烈不满，甚至被误解为是对他们的蓄意侮辱。
