I．Purposes
日常生活中，我们周围的人，我们的亲人和朋友，免不了会为一些事犯难。这时，我们需要帮助他们，给他们出主意，提建议（make suggestions），为他们排忧解难，使他们摆脱困境。另一方面，对他们某些欠妥的言行或决定，我们也应该提出劝解或忠告（give advice），以防止不良后果的发生。比如劝人戒烟：I advise you to give up smoking．／You'd better give up smoking．等。
建议的目的和劝告一样，是为了让人们的行为更加合理，对达到某一目的或实现某一愿望更加有利。一般说来，劝告比建议语气更重一些，有时还略带几分强制的意味，像You'd better．．．就属于这一类句型。

（A）劝告和建议
Why not spend the summer holidays making up your English？为什么不利用暑假补补英语？
What／How about eating out for supper？晚饭出去吃怎么样？
You'd better go and ask the teacher for her permission．你最好去征求老师的同意。
You ought to ／should go to the seaside for a few days to improve your health．为了你的健康，你应该到海边去住几天。
We would be delighted if you could cooperate with us on this project．你要是能与我们合作搞这个项目，我们将感到高兴。
If I were you I would stick to my opinion．我要是你，就会坚持自己的意见。
If you ask me，I'd say you should say“sorry”to your girlfriend as soon as pos- sible．要问我，我认为你应该尽快向你的女朋友道歉。
Don't you think it might be a good idea to wait a moment？你不认为还是等一会儿好吗？
I should say a little work would do you no harm．我说，做一点儿工作对你没有害处。

Yes，I certainly will．行，没问题。／对，我一定会。
That's a good idea．那是个好主意。

III．Background information
提建议和劝告时也要注意方法和分寸。在英、美国家，对家人或亲密朋友提建议或劝告时通常都比较随便和直截了当，他们常用如下的表达法：
Why don't you．．．？
What／How about ．．．？
You'd better ．．．
但需注意的是，对长辈不宜用“You'd better．．．”或“Why not．．．？”等较强硬的口气。
当对其他人提建议或忠告感到困难或不易时，则常采用一种更为正式或间接委婉的表达方式。他们常会这样说：
We were wondering if you'd like to．．．
We would be delighted if you could．．．
We had thought of ．．．if that would be convenient．
We'll hope you'll be able to ．．．
英国人以保守和委婉、含蓄著称，但他们也不乏幽默。向朋友推荐一部好电影，他们会说“It's not bad，you know．”其实，英国人的notbad却常常相当于“第一流的（first－class）”、“优秀的（excellent）”。
