(一)准确理解词义
　　1. 根据上下文辨词义。
　　2. 论褒贬，即要注意同义词之间有不同的语体色彩、使用范围及程度。
　　任何语言都有语体之分，有高雅的、通俗的、粗野 的，还有俚语、公文用语及术语等。文学作品中，作家通过不同的语体来刻画人物的性格特征，更是常用的方法。翻译时，必须审其雅俗，量其轻重，这样，才能恰如其分地表达原文的精神。
　　(1) 词义有轻重的不同
　　例如表示“打破”的词
　　break是最一般的用语，意思是经打击或施加压力而破碎。
　　crack是出现了裂缝，但还没有变成碎片。
　　crush是从外面用力往内或从上往下而压碎。

Dr.eye：价值观，一般的翻译是“values”,这在《牛津高阶英汉双解词典》的词条“value”的第三个注释里，需要注意的是一定要用复数表示。除了表示“价值观念”之外，values还表示“职业道德、行为标准、准则”等等。
在网友jamie的答复里说到英国南方用“criteria”来表示价值观。但实际上，虽然“criteria”也被用来表示“价值观”，但是最常表示的还是一种“评鉴标准”，指“用于检测质量的标准，不管是否成文”。此外，standard表示“法定的，权威的度量标准”；gauge只用于表示“测量某个维度的具体方法”，如测量口径的方法。
这儿，要说明其实在英语国家，有的时候，他们并不像ESL的学习者一样把词汇之间的差别分得很清楚
